Panégoptique is an interactive installation that dynamically fuses the faces of two visitors to conjure up imaginary beings at the intersection of familiarity and alterity. By blending texture, color, and topology it creates uncanny portraits that invite discussions on the mediation of our self-image by technology, by society and by our own vanity and fears.
The installation itself is a sculptural assembly of 13 obsolete, but fully working, iPhones. The devices use face detection technology to track and grab pictures of the visitor’s visages. By invoking the ubiquity and cultural significance of the iPhone, the installation questions our relation to status and obsolescence, but also to biosurveillance and self-representation.
