Mmm is an interactive installation and/or participative performance allowing 5 users to produce an original popular music piece in real time starting from a previously prepared sound canvas.
Each participant is assigned a touchscreen that he can use to alter the music as it is being generated. By using algorithmic, musical and technological trickery, the system allows anybody to participate no matter their musical skills level.
Presentation videos
The default physical setup consists of 5 interactive stations equipped with touchscreens laid out in a half-circle. This layout allows the crowd to walk (or dance) around the participants and see how the music is being created in real-time.
Should you need it, a more detailed version of this floor plan with technical specs is also available in PDF format.
Mmm is the result of the research I conducted for my master’s degree in experimental media (communication faculty) at Université du Québec à Montréal.
Initial presentation before audience
Here is a video of the first public presentation of the beta version during the Sennheiser Scholarship Concert. It was recorded at the Agora Hydro-Québec in Montreal on May 1st, 2013.
This is so awesome – like a collective tenori-on, on steroids
Yep, that’s the idea. Thanks for the goods words. I’m currently working on a spin off of this project. Hopefully for the summer… Stay tuned!
